Search hit count does not make sense

When entering some search input, text appears above the results indicating the number of hits. For example, currently when I enter test in the first search box, it reads We have found about 108 hit(s).. This could reasonably be the total number of hits. When scrolling down to load more than the first 10 hits, this number increases, to multiples of 108. When scrolled down all the way (no more results get loaded) the number of hits shown is 2268, which is 21 * 108. The actual number of results shown was inconsistent across trials (potentially another bug). Presumably, the number of hits gets increased by 108 every time another batch of ten results is loaded, instead of staying constant.
